Portuguese Prime-Minister visits Angola

17-09-2018

The Portuguese Prime-Minister Antonio Costa initiates this Monday a two-day visit to Angola.

This visit is seen as a resumption of relations between the two countries after troubled times. After difficult periods in recent months, involving the transfer to the Angolan court of the process in which former vice president Manuel Vicente is accused, this gathering is seen with great expectation from both sides.

Costa has already caused controversy after arriving in Luanda in a clothing too informal and incongruous to a head of government. One of his first concerns was to emphasize that both countries should be concerned with outlining the future, and that depends in establishing a strategic agreement. In fact, the future is the most important, but we mustn't forget the past so as not to make the same mistakes again in the future!

The two governments should sign a convention to end double taxation and a memorandum that should speed up the settlement of debts to Portuguese companies.

The circulation between the two countries is another of the themes that the two Governments should address. For the reformulation of the Portuguese immigration policy, it is important to have a system that facilitates movement between Portuguese-speaking countries, or at least among the majority.
